What is llms.txt and do you need it?

An llms.txt is a small text file that gives language models an overview of your website. It is useful to have, but not a magic fix.

What it is

An llms.txt is a Markdown file you place in the root of your website, at yourwebsite.com/llms.txt. It says briefly who you are, what you do and where your key pages are. It is a proposed standard, meant to give language models something to hold on to.

Is it used?

Not everywhere yet. Not all providers have said they read it. It costs little to make and does no harm, but do not expect miracles. Treat it as one part next to clear pages and structured data.

What goes in it

  • A heading with your business name.
  • A summary in one or two sentences: what you do, for whom and where.
  • Sections with links to your key pages, each with one line of explanation.
  • Contact details and service area.

Write it yourself or generate it

You can write it by hand. AgentRank generates an llms.txt for you based on your website, which you copy and place in the root.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need JSON-LD as well as llms.txt?

They are different things. llms.txt is a readable overview, JSON-LD is structured data inside your pages. They complement each other.

Where do I put the file?

In the root of your website so it is reachable at yourwebsite.com/llms.txt. How you do that depends on your hosting or CMS.
